Review of the minutes from the July 12, 2007 meeting

Welcome and Self- Introductions

Chairman’s Report – Cliff Hamlow – Cliff reported that Valarie has been sending out the Cal Chamber Alerts to the Legislative Committee, but perhaps it is something that should be sent to the entire membership, especially information on job-killer bills.  Bob Cruz suggested that the Legislative Committee focus on one or two key education points to get out to the membership.  He volunteered to take on grades K-12 if Marilyn Grinsdale would focus on higher education.  These points will be brought to the Committee for review.  Luis Cetina said he would forward water issue to Valarie to bring to the Committee’s attention.  It has been suggested that the Committee resume holding a monthly Legislative Luncheon featuring speakers who would speak on governmental issues relating to the small business person.  These lunches will be held at the Glendora Unified School District Board Room on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 12:00 – 1:15 pm at a cost of $10 per person including lunch. Cliff Hamlow volunteered to be responsible for obtaining the speakers.  This matter will be brought before the Board of Directors at the September 19th Board meeting for their approval.  The proposed list of lunches is as follows:

10/18 or 10/26 – Glendora City Manager Chris Jeffers

11/16 – One of the Legislators

Dark in December

2008

1/17 – Citrus College and new Glendora area board member

2/21 – Utilities Forum

3/20 – Legislator or Glendora Schools

4/17 – Community Leaders Luncheon (depends on Legislators schedules)

Cliff then asked the Committee if they want to continue holding the regular Legislative monthly meetings on the 1st Thursday of each month?  Bob Cruz mentioned that he would like to do an energy forum with all the utilities.  Transportation issues are another topic that needs looking into. And Luis Cetina mentioned that he would like to partner with Bob Cruz in February to do something on the San Gabriel Valley as well as do a breakfast in April with one of the legislators on the Metropolitan Water District.  It was decided to continue to meet on the 1st Thursday of each month @ noon in addition to the Legislative Luncheons.

Legislative Updates -  Please limit reports to 3 minutes or less and bring handouts for the Committee:

Brian Mejia, Supervisor Antonivich:  The Supervisor has ordered all bridges in the County to be inspected due to the bridge collapse in Michigan.  West Nile Virus is a concern.  The Supervisor has ordered public works to clean all water ways.  September 22nd is another scheduled hazardous waste roundup at the Covina Wal-Mart.

Corey Calaycay, Senator Margett:   The budget was signed last week.  Senator Margett voted “no”   Three initiatives will be on the February ballot.  1. Term Limits.  2. Transportation Funding.  3. Community College.

Steve Johnson, Assemblyman Adams: On Monday, the 10th the Governor has to decide to vote on Iraq.  The Legislators should be done sometime next week.

Glendora Unified School District, Catherine Nichols – School modernization is being finished.  Due to declining enrollment, 323 were kids were lost last year for a loss of $1.8 million in funding.  That comes to a loss of 4%  in one year resulting in staff cuts and program cut backs.  Since 2002 enrollment has declined by 9% and the State is offering no help.

Old Business – New Business:  Cliff suggested legislative updates from the Legislators be emailed to the entire membership.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:30 pm
